The local organisation only boasts 10 to 12 active members – and more are desperately needed to maintain its current workload.
“We’re always looking for additional people,” Scone SES Local Controller Allan Davidson said.
“In fact, it appears as though all SES Units are having that problem at the moment.
“But, we’ve already given up first response rescue and we’re in the process of scaling back on other duties, like coordinating the road closures at things such as the Scone Equine Hospital Festival Parade.
“We tried to get other Units to help – and received one member from Aberdeen and a further two from Lake Macquarie.
“At this stage, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to assist next year.
“It will depend on [our] numbers.”
Mr Davidson, who has spent 28 years with the SES and the past 12 as the Local Controller, said everyone was “time poor” these days.
“People are a lot more busy,” he admitted.
“They’re working longer shifts, so when they get some free time, they want to spend it with the family.
“However, I think joining the SES is a very rewarding activity.
“I’m proud to do it – and, when you receive a ‘thank you’, you certainly appreciate the role.
“Our main function is storms and floods, but we don’t get many of them (storms), which is lucky.
“It’s disappointing that groups like the SES are constantly trying to attract new members.
“The organisation does a great job.”
