And, that’s the case for the Scone Mustangs Football Club (FC) who has turned to Lenice Cover to guide the interdistrict all age side’s campaign in 2017.
When the local outfit struggled to find a mentor for the men’s team, the enthusiastic woman was quick to step into the role.
“My son [Declan] is playing but they didn’t have a coach,” she explained.
“So, ‘mum’ put her hand up to help out – it’s what we do.
“I’ve coached junior representative sides previously, however that was a long time ago.
“But, this is good fun.
“They’re a great bunch of guys, with ages ranging from 16 to 52.
“I love working with them.
“Everyone’s enjoying themselves, having a lot of fun.
“If you’re not doing that, then it isn’t worth it.”
The Mustangs dropped the opening two games of the season to Largs FC (3-0) and Swansea (5-3) before tasting success against Hamilton Azzurri 3-2.
However, they hit a hurdle in the shape of Valentine, losing 9-0.
A wash-out interrupted their preparation last weekend.
“I’m happy with the way we’re travelling,” Cover said.
“The players are giving it their all – 110 per cent.
“That’s what any coach wants.
“Plus, the boys have never played together before, so I think they’re doing an ace job.
“They’re just happy to have a game.”
The Mustangs face Mayfield Junior at the Bill Rose Sports Complex on Saturday – and Cover is confident of a strong showing at home.
“Our rivals are a bit of an unknown quantity,” she said.
“But, we’ll have a full team on deck.
“I know they’ll give it their best, too.
“They’re also playing brilliantly.
“Our squad boasts a lot of experienced blokes who are pushing the younger guys.
“In the second half of the season, we’ll lift.
“And, that will give us something to build on in 2018.”
The club’s under-13s run onto the field from 1pm, with the all age side starting its encounter at 2.15pm.
