Local residents, as well as the business community, converged on the Uniting Church in Kingdon Street to enjoy a cuppa and sample some delicious homemade cakes and slices.
And, the organisation’s hard-working members were, quite simply, run off their feet.
Scone and District Cancer Support Group president June Day was delighted with the response.
“So far, we’ve served more than 150 people,” she said.
“It’s been amazing.
“We were hoping to improve on last year’s efforts – and I think we’ve done that.”
Now in its 24th edition, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is one of Cancer Council’s leading fundraisers and the largest, most successful event of its kind in Australia.
This year, Cancer Council NSW is keen to raise more than $4.9 million across the state.
To mark the occasion, Cancer Council NSW has also launched the Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea Cookbook, with 29 recipes to inspire NSW residents to put the kettle on in support of the one in two Australians who will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.
The cookbook is available to download for free online at www.cancercouncil.com.au/abmt-cookbook-2017
Cancer Council Hunter Region regional manager Shayne Connell admitted every morning tea made a difference.
“One Australian is diagnosed with cancer approximately every five minutes, the length of an average tea break,” he said.
“Today is all about making your cuppa count.
“Every amount raised, big or small, can go a long way.
“$15 allows Cancer Council to provide easy-to-understand information on treatments, practical advice and emotional support to cancer patients and their families.
“$50 makes sure there’s a cancer nurse available on 13 11 20 to offer information and support to callers.
“This year, we’re celebrating the unique cancer support services that Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea helps fund each year across the region.
“Whether it’s Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 Information and Support service or the practical transport and financial assistance for patients having treatment, every dollar raised at the morning tea events make a huge difference in the lives of local people living with cancer.”
