There are excursions, gymnastics and tennis, indigenous cultural activities, arts and crafts at the libraries, fun at the youth centres and a packed Scone Out Of School Hours (SOOSH) program.
All the details are included in the Upper Hunter Shire Council “What’s On” guide to school holiday activities.
What’s On is distributed to most school children in the Upper Hunter and is available on council’s website under Hot Topics, http://upperhunter.nsw.gov.au/our-facilities/childcare/school-holiday-activities.aspx
Some of the holiday highlights include:
* NAIDOC Week celebration including a “yarning circle” and guest speaker on Aboriginal language Sharon Edgar-Jones. This free event open to children accompanied by an adult, will be held at Council Chambers, Scone, from 10am on Tuesday, July 4.
* Gymnastics at Scone Youth Centre. Join a three-day program for $60 or a “Come and Try” morning for $15. Book with council’s sports participation officer Nicky Western on 0414 806 074.
* Aboriginal Art Workshops on Monday, July 10, at Scone Library. The workshops will be conducted by Wonnarua artist Michelle Earl and are an initiative of Scone Library and the Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre. The workshops are free and are for children under 8 years old (10.30am to 11.30am) and 9 years and older (1pm to 2pm). Bookings are essential to Scone Library on 6540 1183.
* Movie excursion from Merriwa Youth Centre on Thursday, July 13.
* Trampolining excursion to Revolution Park, Newcastle, on Friday, July 14, organised by the Scone and Murrurundi Youth Workers. The bus will leave from Murrurundi at 9am and Scone at 9.30am and return at around 5.30pm. The cost is $25 not including lunch. * At the libraries there is Book Bingo as well as free morning art and craft activities throughout the holidays. All ages are welcome but children under school age must be accompanied by a parent or carer and bookings are essential.
* For those who need more activities for children five-to-12 years, the SOOSH program, located in the grounds of St Mary’s School, Scone, runs 8am-6pm weekdays during NSW school holiday periods with afternoon tea provided. Bookings are essential for all SOOSH services and additional costs may apply for excursions and special activities.
This July, SOOSH will be joining the gymnastics in Scone, NAIDOC activities, going to Muswellbrook Movies on Thursday, July 6; Barefoot Bowls on Monday, July 10; and Snow Day at the Hunter Valley Gardens on Wednesday, July 12.
