Mia made her historic debut as the youngest female ever to play in the English polo high goal at the British Gold Cup, playing locally bred mare Haydon Spanish Jet of the Haydon Horse Stud in Blandford.
“Mia played Haydon Spanish Jet in two chukkas making a couple of cracking runs on her at top speed,” said Peter Haydon, owner of the Haydon Horse Stud.
Mia is following in the footsteps of her father, polo champion and expert rider Adolfo Cambiaso, who currently holds the world number one polo ranking.
In an astounding case of history repeating itself, Mia’s debut in the British Gold Cup marks the same place that her father Adolofo Cambiaso made his debut as a young sixteen year old riding on a 6 goal handicap only to be promoted to 9 goals for the following year.
The Haydon Horse Stud at Bloomfield near Scone, conducted by Peter and Ali Haydon, has a rich history of breeding in the Upper Hunter, with their horses being bred by the same family on the same property since the early 1830s.
Haydon Spanish Jet is undoubtedly a proud achievement for the family, being crowned her first Best Playing Pony locally at Timor before going on to win the Ellerston final played by top-ranked New Zealand polo player John Paul Clarkin.
Spanish Jet won the 26 goal Westchester Cup Test in her first season in England and has been flown back to England after playing in the United States high goal with Argentinian Facundo Sola.
Sired by the stud bred stallion, Haydon The Don, Spanish Jet is closely related to Hall of Fame mare Haydon Angel Jewel who has played in and won all the major world tournaments including the world’s best, winning the Argentine Triple Crown in 2013.
Haydon Angel Jewel’s remarkable career under the expert guidance of the world’s best polo player, Adolfo Cambiaso, ended last year after being retired at fifteen years of age.
Angel Jewel's retirement followed a final return trip to America, where she won the 2016 US Gold Cup for the third time running.
Peter Haydon said that they are also continuing the bloodline, breeding from Spanish Jet's two sisters.
“Her ability directly reflects her breeding, combining the elite bloodlines of champion sires with a very strong maternal line.”
He describes her as “one of those incredibly athletic mares, very light but also one of the softest mares you would ever ride”.
