After securing the 2017 Vienna State Opera Award, from the Opera Foundation, in May, the talented songstress found out this week that she is one of five finalists for the 2017 Elizabeth Connell Prize.
“When I received the notification early Sunday morning, I was speechless when reading the words saying that I had been chosen [as a finalist],” Ms Jopson said.
“Then a rush of excitement set in.
“Elizabeth Connell was a truly gifted dramatic soprano and artist.
“To be chosen for this prestigious international competition, named in her memory, is such a great honour.
“It gives me confidence moving forward in my career.”
The 91st Herald Sun Aria winner now finds herself vying for the prize on a global scale.
“This year’s finalists are from all over the world,” Ms Jopson explained.
“We are all in the early stages of burgeoning careers and I am yet to become familiar with their scope of work.
“So, I am looking forward to meeting them all and hearing them sing in September.
“The judging takes place over two days with a preliminary final and final public concert in which the judges have a strict criteria in their decision-making process.
“They are seeking vocal quality, technique, potential, communication skills, musicality and polish, as well as current and future plans.”
At present, Ms Jopson is in Melbourne for the Melbourne Opera’s production of Lohengrin by Richard Wagner.
“I’m covering the role of Elsa,” she said.
“And, counting down the days until my trip to Vienna.
“Winning the 2017 Vienna State Opera Award was a dream come true.
“I’ve never been to Vienna but know all about it and its rich music history.
“I am eagerly looking forward to my time there at one of the world’s top opera houses.”
Ms Jopson said she had fond memories of Scone.
“I remember making music with my friends and performing at high school,” she told the Advocate.
“But, my family is still in the Scone area.
“I return often, in between contracts, for down-time and to prepare the next role that I am contracted for.”
