Darren Jones was just 48 and had been riding for more than 30 years when he tragically lost his life in a race fall at Warialda on April 8 this year.
The fundraising event will be held at Tamworth Jockey Club with proceeds from a live and silent auction going towards Darren’s wife and two young children.
Sky Racing's Greg Radley will host the event which will include guest appearances by Australia’s top jockey Hugh Bowman, the rider of superstar mare Winx, and legendary former jockey Malcolm Johnston.
Scone Race Club CEO, Heath Courtney said the effect of the jockey’s death had rocked the Scone racing community earlier this year and the appeal has been something the community has rallied behind.
“It was definitely felt widely in the Scone Race Club and the broader racing community – a lot of studs in the area have also rallied behind the night by making donations,” he said.
“The Scone Race Club has put up a package for auction for the 2018 Darley Scone Cup Carnival valued at $880 including racecourse entry, reserved seating, canapes, and a luncheon as well as entry to the Darley Marquee after 5pm.”
The generosity from the racing community has come from near and far with the benefit night to feature a total of 60 auction lots, including rare sporting memorabilia such as signed boxing gloves of world champion Kostya Tszyu and Jeff Fenech and singed racing colours of the great mare Winx.
Tickets to the Darren Jones Family Appeal, which starts at 6pm are $50 and still available for purchase from the Tamworth Jockey Club.
