Upper Hunter mayor Wayne Bedggood said the two shires working together was an effective way to promote and grow the region.
“This Regional Cultural Development Strategy 2017-2021 supports our community’s vision and the strong commitment of our council to work cooperatively with our neighbour Muswellbrook Shire Council to enhance cultural experiences in the region,” Cr Bedggood said.
“This strategy, like the Upper Hunter Country Tourism organisation, is one of a number of ways that we work cooperatively with Muswellbrook Shire.
“The draft strategy identifies our cultural footprint in the region including local cultural development initiatives and opportunities and acts as a supporting document for future funding.
“The Upper Hunter Shire has a vibrant culture that reflects our history, our strong agriculture and equine industries and the beautiful environment where we live, work and play.
“Our rich culture is highly-visible during our four major festivals: the Scone Horse Festival, Aberdeen Highland Games, Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces and the King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge in Murrurundi.
“All are popular annual events that have become synonymous with our shire, contributing to our sense of place and belonging and are shared with many visitors.
“However, Upper Hunter culture can be enjoyed at any time of the year through many attractions from museums and galleries to a beautiful natural landscape rich in Aboriginal meaning.
“As a large shire with a relatively small population, we take pride in making our own entertainment and telling our own stories.
“Upper Hunter Shire Council is also close to finalising our first Cultural Plan, a document that highlights some of our community’s many forms of cultural expression.
“It also provides a guide to council and other community groups for future cultural development activity and investment.”
