Kristy from Baerami Creek near Denman, is a year 8 student at Merriwa Central School, and has a keen interest in agriculture having competed for a number of years in cattle judging with great success including wins at the Singleton Beef and Land Management junior judging competition while a student at Sandy Hollow Primary School.
Her most recent success included exhibiting the grand champion led steer at this year’s Merriwa and Singleton Show.
The Murray Grey cross Limousin steer is being prepared for the upcoming Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza held in Scone October 27-29 but on his way to that event he has impressed the judges with this finish and muscling.
Kristy has fed and prepared the steer that was born on her grandfather R.E. Jackson’s 1224 hectare property.
At Singleton Show judge Tim Vincent, Booragul Angus, Piallaway, described the steer as having outstanding capacity with the ability to yield exceptionally well.
In addition to success with her steers Kristy will also be heading to next year’s Sydney Royal Show for the NSW Agricultural Societies Council (ASC) junior judging state finals in the grains section.
She gained second place judging grains at Merriwa Show along with a third place in the fleece judging competition.
Her family’s property has provided Kristy with plenty of hand-on experience as it produces, hay, grain as well as beef cattle.
Kristy is keen to pursue an agricultural education with her current plans involving attending Tocal Agricultural College, Paterson once she finishes high school.
“After that I think I will study childcare at TAFE,” she said.
“I love working on the farm and competing at the shows.”
So keen on a farming career Kristy has now started her own Limousin stud – Rosethorn Park.
“I looked Charolais or Limousin for my stud but in the end decided on Limousin – I guess I just really like Limousin cattle,” she said.
