His Honour Magistrate Roger Prowse, acting in his capacity as a Coroner, will review the passing of Jonathon Lawler and Timothy Morgan, from separate incidents in town, on Wednesday and Thursday, November 1 and 2.
About 2.13am on August 30, 2010, Mr Lawler was struck and killed by a train at Scone Railway Station.
Then, about 1.15am on December 13, 2015, Mr Morgan suffered a similar fate at the level crossing of Liverpool Street.
“Both had been drinking at the Scone RSL Club in the hours prior and it appears they’d passed out or fallen asleep on the train tracks sometime after leaving the club,” Coronial Advocate Senior Constable Peter Bain said.
“So, a joint inquest into these deaths will be held at Scone Local Court on November 1 and 2.
“The issues to be touched upon are whether there are systemic issues with Scone RSL Club contravening responsible service of alcohol guidelines and what, if anything, could have been done to have prevented the deaths?
“Joint inquests are not uncommon; they do happen sometimes.
“In Sydney, one took place about quad bike crashes and another is scheduled to look into waterskiing accidents.”
Besides determining certain legal issues, the court in its Coronial jurisdiction is concerned with matters of public safety and has the power – under the Coroners Act – to make recommendations in that regard.
“Magistrate Prowse is, among other things, interested in highlighting public safety issues relating to excessive alcohol consumption, particularly in the lead-up to Christmas,” Senior Constable Peter Bain said.
“As well, police welcome anyone who could provide any evidence relevant to these deaths and issues to make contact with them.”
