Champion country jockey Robert Thompson declared “it was like winning The Everest for us battling country people” after his victory in the $200,000 Anniversary Highway aboard After All That.
Scone Race Club commissioned for the silks worn by Thompson to be signed by the top hoops who competed in the $10 million feature event at Randwick.
“It was amazing to see Scone’s Rod Northam taking out the race with After All That,” Scone Race Club CEO Heath Courtney said.
“Jockey Robert Thompson proudly wore our new club colours in support of the foundation.
“This was the first outing for the new colours,” he said.
The silks will now be auctioned off at a special charity race meeting at the club on October 27 and Courtney said they are expecting to go for around the $5,000 mark.
“As far as we know, the signed silks are the only memorabilia from all 12 jockeys in The Everest available,” Courtney said.
“All of the eight races on the day will be named after the Where There’s A Will foundation.”
Where There’s A Will’s executive officer Andrea Burns said she was overwhelmed by the support from both the race club and also Ian Campbell from the Royal Hotel.
“Ian is the driving force behind the whole thing and has put a lot of effort into the organisation of the event,” Mrs Burns said.
“The response from the community and people coming on board to organise fundraising events has been absolutely amazing,” she said.
Mrs Burns said that while the national attention from Everest day is excellent – the focus for the charity is still on rasing awareness and training in the Upper Hunter.
“We are fundamentally aiming for a thriving Upper Hunter and building knowledge and skills to assist in positive growth for our youth,” she said.
Scone Race Club gates open at 11:30am on Friday October 27 and tickets for the function centre are $70 available at The Royal Hotel in Scone.
