The annual Summer Reading Club program is set to hit Upper Hunter libraries again this summer.
The program encourages anyone from three years to 17 years to join in the fun and read as many books as possible from December 1 through until January 23 2018.
The program is available at Upper Hunter Shire libraries in Aberdeen, Cassilis, Merriwa, Murrurundi and Scone.
Every child will be given a ‘Passport” on which they write the titles of the books they read and when they reach 10 books will be awarded a small prize.
The highest number of books read overall will be rewarded at a party at the end of the program.
This year the theme is GAME ON in preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in April, 2018.
As such GAME ON is an invitation to celebrate our Aussie sporting culture, teams, mateship, as well as the countries who will visit Australia to compete in the Commonwealth Games.
The Summer Reading Club encourages children and young people to discover great authors and illustrators, with the aim of instilling a love of reading and ongoing multi-literacy skills development.
Library coordinator Elizabeth Walter said young people could join the library for free and register for the program.
“Teachers have found children don’t read enough over the holidays which hinders them the following term,” Mrs Walter said.
“The library keeps a record of the number of books borrowed and read and then throws a party at the end of the reading period.
“Each child receives a certificate and some small prizes are available for the most avid readers.”
The branches of the Upper Hunter Regional Library Network, have had a major upgrade and library users will experience a much more accessible online member portal with enhanced access to digital resources including e-books, audio books, online magazines and more.
