And, seven lucky young people will be embarking on the 10 day voyage when the Young Endeavour sets sail in early 2018.
The tall ship sailing voyage is a partnership between community sponsors and the Upper Hunter Shire Council, with nominee fundraising also supporting the program.
The seven participants will survive sea sickness, cold, wet, cramped conditions, sleep deprivation, climbing to the top of the mast – all without their phones or television.
The challenge is all part of the experience, according to Cr James Burns who has a personal connection through his days in the Navy.
“Rarely do our youth get the opportunity to experience the wonders of ocean voyages, particularly on a tall ship such as the Young Endeavour,” Cr Burns said.
“This ensures that the youth will have a personal growth experience and leadership training through the challenges of the voyage.”
Among the lucky participants are three females - Emma Reynolds, Bridget Crowe and Phoebe Weatherly and the three males – Toby Barry, Callum Telfer and James Hagely whose names were drawn at an event on Wednesday, 22 November 2017 at Scone Race Club.
This year, an additional young person, Tori McNaught, will also be participating in the Young Endeavour thanks to a generous anonymous sponsor.
The program has been supported by Council since 1998 with nearly 80 young adventurers setting sail in that time.
The seven Young Endeavour crew will sail from Sydney in April 2018.
