The 16-year-old Scone Grammar School student said she was in tears of joy when she took out the EA Australasian Show Horse Championship Rider for the 15-17 year age group.
“I was so excited,” Katrina said.
“I have trained every day in the lead up riding before school and after school on a different horse.
“It’s a lot of work but you have to work hard to see results.”
Two representatives from every Australian state competed in the final on Saturday with each rider having to previously win their state final to earn a place in the championship.
Coach Robyne Smith from Gwandalan Stables, Scone, said Katrina is a seriously committed student who has the talent and ability to achieve great things.
“She couldn’t have done it any better,” Ms Smith said.
“She’s a great student who has an amazing commitment to what she does and the star amongst many others at Gwandalan stables.”
Katrina competed on 9-year-old Gwandalan Snowman – a horse owned by Deborah Fullwood from Tamworth.
Ms Smith said it isn’t the first title that has been picked up aboard Snowman after the coach took out a recent NSW championship herself.
“I’ll be staying in Melbourne where I will compete in Wednesday’s Victorian State Dressage Championships on Snowman as well,” she said.
“Katrina is also sticking around this week to help with the stables.”
Ms Gorman said it was the least she could do after all Robyn has done for her as a coach.
“Robyn helps me out a lot and so I thought I would repay her – she’s a very generous person and an excellent mentor,” she said.
In addition to Katrina winning the Australasian and NSW titles she has a number of dressage championships, hack events and champion rider titles to her credit.
The Year 10 student had her very proud mother Jane on hand to share the moment.
Ms Gorman will now continue to train hard for her next big events at the Bathurst Royal and Sydney Royal Easter Show in 2018.
