Emergency services rushed to the scene on the New England Highway about just before midday and arrived to find a head-on crash between a Toyota SUV and a Ford ute.
The driver - a 51-year-old woman - was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
The driver of ute - a 24-year-old man - was not injured.
There were no other injuries reported, police said.
Both drivers were subject to roadside breath tests, which returned with negative results for both.
Police said inquiries continue.
