POLICE have uncovered a highly sophisticated marijuana growing operation at Nirranda featuring a hidden bunker under a shipping container. After a two-month operation, officers from Port Campbell and Timboon led yesterday's raid which found more than 100 plants. Warrnambool detectives and members of the Warrnambool police divisional response unit were also involved. A Nirranda man aged in his mid-40s was yesterday remanded in custody charged with cultivating marijuana. Police found three separate growing areas, including more than 30 plants near the house. Other more mature plants were found growing hydroponically in a shipping container at the rear of the property. Police noticed a ventilation system and investigations led to the discovery of a bunker also set up as a hydroponic nursery underneath the shipping container. A secured trapdoor under a workbench led to the bunker via internal steps. Inside officers found 33 almost-mature plants. Police put the total value of plants found at more than $50,000. A Ryans truck was called in to help remove the growing equipment, which included electrical components and plant nutrients. One experienced officer said it was the most sophisticated hydroponic set-up he had seen. He said access to the bunker was only gained after the trapdoor mechanism was released and the workbench slid clear on runners. "It's the best I've seen by a long way ," he said. Also yesterday, a Cobden woman, 48, was charged with drug offences after police raided her Curdie Street home at 9.45am. Officers found 35 grams of cannabis and other drug paraphernalia including digital scales, smoking pipes, deal bags and mobile phones. The woman was bailed to appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court next month. athomson@fairfaxmedia.com.au
