CRICKET in the Upper Hunter was bowled over by a financial windfall last week.
Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon announced the final successful project under round one of the federal government’s Stronger Communities Program.
The Aberdeen Junior Cricket Club will receive $14,832 for the Jefferson Park pitch and practice nets upgrade.
The Stronger Communities Program funds small capital projects in local communities with funding of $150,000 per electorate per year.
The project runs for two years, starting 2015-16, with grants between $5000 and $20,000 available.
However, all applicants need to confirm matched funding in cash and/or in-kind on at least a dollar for dollar basis.
While in the region on Thursday, Mr Fitzgibbon said the grant would be a big help to the Aberdeen cricket community.
“I know how hard it is for local groups to fundraise to upgrade facilities and replace items,” he said.
“It can take months and years for volunteers in small organisations to raise this type of money for capital works projects.
“I congratulate and thank the Aberdeen Junior Cricket Club for its quality submission.”
