HE has been told it will never happen, but Doug McLeod is determined to get an Aberdeen RSL Sub-branch up and running.
The typical role of a Sub-branch is to serve the interests of its members, veterans, the ex-service community and the members of the Australian Defence Force.
Mr McLeod says it’s important that locals who fought, and died, in battle continue to be remembered.
“There’s a younger generation coming through now and we really want to look out for the ones from the Vietnam War onward,” he says.
“I know there’s already a Sub-branch in Muswellbrook and one in Scone, but I think it’s really important that this town supports anyone who has served from here [Aberdeen].
“It will get the whole community together and it’s our job to remember them.
“I have been told that it’s not possible to get this going but I’ve been pushing hard for a while now and it’s looking more positive.”
The RSL president is now calling on expressions of interest of new membership for the sub-branch.
Although there is a stringent process involved with forming a Sub-branch, a meeting of potential members will be the second step.
The meeting is expected to take place on Friday, October 7 at the Aberdeen RSL.
