More than 20 teams from Avoca, Gosford, Newcastle Wanderers, Tamworth, Narrabri, Armidale and the host organisation took part in a total of 50 games, ranging from under-8s to under-14s.

But, it was the side featuring the town’s former “stars”, which had people talking.

“We like to call them the Scone Old Boys,” SJRU president Renee Park said.

“They attend school outside the area these days, and some even play league, so they don’t live here anymore.

“But, the boys joined forces to come home and participate [in the challenge], which was great to see.”

Park said the event had grown since its inception three years ago.

“We now host it annually,” she explained.

“And, it’s increased each season.

“In 2017, we have about 390 players – and five more teams.

“Unlike the Gala Days in Central North Rugby, this is competitive.

“Plus, all proceeds from the day go to the Cauliflower Club.

“Established in late 2012 by Peter FitzSimons and Nick Farr-Jones, it is a rugby-based charity committed to providing sporting and recreational equipment to enhance the lives of those with a disability, with a bias towards sporting-related injuries.

“The money generally goes back into the area and, thankfully, we haven’t really needed it in Scone yet.”
