Off the back of a successful Northern Inland Academy of Sport’s program, the sixteen-year-old was among five future stars selected to further their skills in a regional development squad.
Joining Glen Innes’ Liz Chard and Emily Burton and Armidale’s Olivia Joyce and Mia Tindale, Scone’s Anna Atkinson was selected as part of the new initiative by Netball NSW.
After putting her hand up for selection in the under-17 team, Atkinson’s talent on the court was recognised by high-performances coaches.
She will now have the chance to further develop her skills through the new program.
“I am really excited that Netball NSW has provided this opportunity for regional athletes,” Atkinson said.
“This program excites me as it is another opportunity to constantly train at a high intensity with other athletes who have similar goals.”
Atkinson said the opportunity would help her reach her overall goal of playing consistent netball at an elite level; however will take a lot of dedication.
“It will require commitment not only from me but my family and I am grateful for the dedication from them,” she said.
“I’m also grateful for the opportunities that have helped me reach this level including Scone netball, the Northern Inland Academy of Sport and all of my coaches.”
It will be a huge year in 2018 for the young athlete, who has also been selected in the Hunter United Division 1 team for Netball NSW Metro League – a commitment that will see her train in Newcastle and play in Sydney on a weekly basis.
“It means I will be very busy in terms of netball but I am excited to be given these opportunities,” Atkinson said.
“A lot of dedication will be required, however I am prepared to do these things to help me reach my goals and I am excited to get to know all of the girls and coaches within these teams and to kick off training and playing.”
