The Landmark Townsend Scone & Merriwa auctioneer took time out to hone his skills this month at the Australian Livestock and Property Agents Association Auctioneers School in Wagga Wagga.
The 21-year-old from Willow Tree joined 23 young agents for two days of intensive training.
“Selling here is completely different to what you do in Sydney – so they work on fine-tuning your skills,” Mr Chaffey said.
“Here, it’s a lot quicker - you have a lot of cattle to go through and have to punch them through a bit whereas in Sydney it’s more crisp and sharp.
“It’s all the little things like your pronunciation and manner.”
Mr Chaffey said being a good auctioneer is all about values and the reputation you have with your buyers and clients.
“I think this competition is a really good opportunity to build on my experience – it all comes down to experience,” he said.
“And, it’s good publicity for the local area."
Agents had to be under the age of 25 to be selected as finalists and will compete for a chance at the coveted John Weekes Memorial trophy.
Competitors are judged by a panel of three judges who take into account their diction, values of the stock they sell, voice and manner, as well as their presence and unique style.
Both the NSW winner and runner-up also earn the right to compete in the 2019 national competition where the prize includes a two-week trip to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to represent Australia at the International Auctioneers Competition.
The 2018 ALPA NSW Young Auctioneers Competition at the Sydney Royal Show will be held on Friday, March 23 2018.
