The 56-year-old who lives and works on the Upper Dartbrook property “Thornthwaite” recently capped off a successful season campdrafting at the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft & Rodeo Association (ABCRA)National Finals in Tamworth.
Earning the title of ABCRA Novice Horse of the Year, Mr Bogie said he was ecstatic to have been given the honour.
“I was over the moon to come away with Novice Horse, it wasn’t what I was expecting,” he said.
The passion for drafting stems from years of early rodeo work and breeding and training his own horses, but Maurice said he has only been competing for the past 15 years.
“I do enjoy it – but competing on my own horses is what makes it a passion,” he said.
“I love drafting, but it wouldn’t mean anything to me if it was on someone else’s horse.
“I’ve been breeding horses my whole life.”
Maurice picked up the title aboard Jomaurensie Augustus – a registered Australian Stock Horses owned and bred by the Bogie family.
“I also came away with Australian Stock Horse Novice Horse of the Year and second place in the Aggregate Novice Horse – held over three rounds,” Mr Bogie said.
Another family owned horse, Jomaurensie Wizard, helped Maurice reign supreme in the Maiden Horse Cut Out – picking up the win, and coming second place in the aggregate Maiden horse, held over three rounds.
Mr Bogie said the event was the highlight of a successful year competing, with another highlight being the Coolah draft.
“You’re always hoping to continue the success,” he said.
“However at the moment is all depends on the drought conditions with a number of events in the Hunter being called off.
“The lack of water is making it incredibly hard to run the events.”
Maurice also qualified and competed in the ABCRA National Finals Master Rider and Open Rider.
