Having carried out a risk assessment in accordance with the National Rugby League’s official Heat Guidelines, the decision was made to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all individuals, including participants and officials, taking part on the day.
Greater Northern Regional area manager Scott Bone said while the outcome was unfortunate, the safety of all participants was always first and foremost.
“It’s disappointing for the kids, who were looking forward to playing on the day, but we have a responsibility to ensure the safety of all our participants and after conducting our risk assessment; the decision to postpone the event was made,” he said.
“The expected temperatures of 38 degrees on Sunday were too great a risk and with consideration given to the parents and schoolkids, with it being a schools-based event, an early decision had to be made to alleviate any travel or organisational concerns.”
Group 21 Junior Rugby League will work with Country Rugby League to identify potential opportunities to host the event later in the year.
