There were plenty of heads scratching trying to recall the last time, if any, Scone has left Singleton winning all four games.
Two teams had to get the job done with only 12 players for around half their games which added to the achievement.
The day started with the Ladies League Tag who recorded a very strong 28 to nil win.
Showing that the win in the preseason competition was no fluke, the team showed that they will be a real force in the competition this year.
Tries went to Sofie Casson (4), Sam Elphick and Sophie Hinde with Sam also adding a couple of conversions in very difficult, windy conditions.
Coach Josh Adams was very pleased with the win and although the points for were pleasing – he was full of praise for the girls defence,
“These girls have only had a couple of games together and they really worked well in defence,” he said.
“Keeping the opposition scoreless was a great result and showed great effort and communication”.
The Under 18’s went into the game with confidence following their achievement last weekend, also winning the pre-season competition.
The young thoroughbreds started the game well and were in the lead 18 to 6 at half time following tries to Ben Fechner (2), Henry Hall and Jake Newman.
The second half started with not much difference between the two teams.
The game changed somewhat following one of the Scone teams being sent from the field with around 25 minutes to go.
Singleton were able to mount pressure and with a mounting pressure and on the back of some errors, managed to draw the scores to 18 all with over 10 minutes to go.
The Scone lads however knuckled down and after getting some good field position were able to capitalise on a Singleton error for Mat Centre to dive over.
The conversion was unsuccessful and the last period of play was tense.
Singleton dropped the ball on a restart and then gave a penalty away near the posts with only minutes to go.
Ben Fechner added the extra two which gave the final score of 24 to 18.
Coach Chris Brennan was proud of the effort of the team in trying circumstances.
“That performance really showed some character and the boys worked very hard to secure the win,” he said.
The Reserve Grade match proved to be a real surprise with Scone converting their 26 to 0 half time score to 48 to 0 full time score.
This was the first game for the team and they showed they will give some of the more fancied sides a run for their money.
Coach Jade Smith was very pleased with the result and praised the whole team.
“This is the first game for the squad which has had very little time together,” he said.
“The boys showed some good ball work and skills but the defence was the key – keeping them scoreless was a great effort.”
Coach Smith also praised the Under 18’s that gained some experience in the older grade and handled themselves very well.
Tries went to Jared Austin (2), Tom Vincent (2), Codie Macarthy, Ryan Hawkshaw, Checka Brennan, Will Tudor, Josh Noble and Will Druitt. Jade Smith added 5 conversions.
The First Grade started off strongly and went to a 18:0 score line after 30 minutes following tries to Tim Bridge, Dan Ritter, Justin Apthorpe and Nick Bridge – Jarrod Wicks converting one.
The momentum came to a halt however when Scone had a player sent off with 6 minutes to go in the first half.
Singleton capitalised on some penalties and was next to score, bringing the half time score to 18:6.
When Justin Apthorpe scored his second to take the score to 22 to 6 after 10 minutes – the supporters were breathing a little more easily; however Singleton applied a lot pressure and with the help of penalties scored the next two converted tries bringing the score to 22 to 18 with only 3 minutes to go.
The crowd were on their feet and the result could have gone either way – however the Thoroughbreds managed to hold on for a four point win.
Coach Aaron Watts praised the team who managed the win in difficult circumstances.
“That was a win that will stand us in good stead for the competition – our strong start allowed to take a comfortable lead – however Singleton made us earn it in the end,” he said.
“The lads all worked very hard and both teams defended well for long periods of time”
