Manager Lee Watts admitted she was excited to have received notification of the funding.
“The centre currently has donated goods of non-perishable items and bread and work with Scone St Vincent de Paul volunteers who distribute the food,” she said.
“The cool room will provide room for more items and food that we have not been able to keep previously.
“Funded with the support of BHP’s Benefiting My Community Program, the cool room will ensure families and individuals have regular access to food.”
Mt Arthur Coal general manager David Boshoff said BHP was proud to be able to help locals in meaningful ways.
“The Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre provides vital support to families in need, so when we assessed the ways we could help the communities where we operate, this project stood out for us,” he explained.
Mrs Watts added the cool room “would make a big difference”.
“At least one family a day is in contact with the service in need of food assistance – that’s 365 families per year,” she said.
“Quite often during holiday periods and in winter, there is an increase in numbers needing support.
“The service is very grateful for the financial contribution from BHP and is working with a local company to build the cool room.
“When the cool room is not in use, it’ll be available for hire and will generated income that will go back into the service to support the local community.”
