Justine Witney, an Infrastructure Maintainer based out of the Australian Rail Track Corporation’s (ARTC) Scone depot, put forward the idea after driving past the signalling boxes regularly.
The signal boxes are in prominent view adjacent to the New England highway and passing motorists and are the regular targets of vandalism.
With colleagues from the Scone maintenance depot, Justine and the team contacted a number of artists, ultimately selecting ‘Binary Creative’ to paint the signal boxes.
Binary Creative researched local flora and fauna, creating site specific imagery that reflect the native wildlife of the area.
The first signal box has been transformed into a mural of birds at Dartbrook and the second – at Blandford – has a vibrant monarch butterfly.
The birds include the Blue Wren, finches and a Willie Wagtail – all wildlife native to the region.
ARTC General Manager Asset Deliver Scott Chapman said the ARTC team were all proud to work and live locally.
“We have a big focus on being good neighbours right along the communities in which we operate in the Hunter Valley and it’s always great when one of our local team’s ideas comes to life.”
The team is funding two more signal box improvements over the next year.
