Since this term of Council was sworn in the direction has had a sustainable change placed over it. From the solar panels in the car park of the main administration building to the way we create our tenders, the environment is a consideration in all decisions we make. I have long been a fan of the saying that the Farmer is the greatest environmentalist for two reasons; the first being that it is true and the second is that a farmer knows that if he/she looks after an environment with an eye on future and a knowledge of the past he/she will reap the benefits. This, Ladies and Gentlemen, is called sustainability and the Farmers of the Upper Hunter have been practicing it for a lot longer than the terms ‘climate change’ or ‘greenhouse gas’ or even ‘global warming’ have been around.

UHSC has employed a Sustainability Manager to assist the Shire in working with problems such as Waste Management and the best practise ways of maintaining a sustainable future for our Shire. I had the opportunity to attend the “Composting” workshop last month and the amount of knowledge I garnered from this 3 hour gem was amazing. “Oils aint Oils” was the line from an ad back in the 80’s; well I now know that “Soils aint Soils”. I am proud to say that my composting venture is up and running and I find it somewhat therapeutic and would recommend this labour of sustainability to anyone who doesn’t want to pay $12 for a bag of compost.
Council received funding from the Office of Environment and Heritage and is offering this type of workshop throughout the year and will endeavour to make them monthly. The next one is about living off the grid, which isn’t like the conspiracy theorist but rather a way of reducing your spend on energy costs. The people delivering this will show the way to completely go “off grid” but you can pick and choose ways for yourself and your household to reduce your usage so that you can reduce your spend on the dreaded Electricity bill. So even if you don’t believe in climate change or think that you can have an impact on reducing it, you can reduce your cost of living by learning some of these tricks. Weather permitting a solar oven will be cooking you up something as well.
