While the Merriwa Magpies hosted the Greta Branxton Colts in reserves and league tag, the Muswellbrook Rams faced the Scone Thoroughbreds in all four grades.
But, in a stunning reversal of form, Scone made amends for last season’s heart-breaking loss, capturing the Will Carrigan Shield for the first time, courtesy of a thrilling 26-24 triumph.
The two-point victory also locked up second spot on the competition ladder – and a major semi-final berth.
It capped off a red-letter day for the Thoroughbreds.
With captain Sofie Casson back in action, the club’s league tag team prevailed 36-0, over an under-strength Ramettes, after leading 28-0 at the break.
Scone’s under-18s snared another exciting encounter, 24-26, while the reserves proved too strong for Muswellbrook 34-12.
In 2017, the Hunter Valley Group 21 Rugby League community rallied to raise $100,000 for the not-for-profit charity.
And, from this weekend, WTAW merchandise and raffle tickets will be on sale at venues and at shops in each town.
The NRL has kindly donated two night’s accommodation and four grand final tickets as first prize while Gerards Restaurant in Denman has provided a $400 dinner voucher for second and third place is a WTAW merchandise pack.
On Sunday, the Singleton Greyhounds meet the Aberdeen Tigers at Pirtek Park from 1.30pm and the Denman Devils tackle the Colts (2.30pm) and Murrurundi (Mavericks - 1pm; and Mavettes – 10.55am).
