Demonstrations, workshops and competitions added to the buzzing atmosphere with many fantastic arrays of flowers ready to impress the judges.

The first floral art show of its kind in the area and was extremely well supported, not only by the Scone and District Garden Club but by exhibitors from all over the state.

Sydney, Canberra, Gloucester, Coonabarabran and Armidale were just some of the areas the 21 exhibitors travelled from to enter their displays, with 53 exhibits of floral art on show.

Competition sections ranged from the simple ‘A Basic Modern’ design style to the more extravagant classes such as ‘Flamboyance’, ‘Interconnected’ and ‘Crumbled’.

The Scone ladies fared extremely well on the day, with many of them first time exhibitors. 

“It’s amazing what you can find in your garden even in a drought,” Scone and District Garden Club treasurer Judy Collison who picked up three seconds and a first said.

Judy placed first in the special home grown class where exhibitors put together a floor based display using anything they could find from their garden.

She said she used bits and pieces that had fallen from her gum tree.

“You can actually put together an arrangement with very few flowers,” she added. 

“I gathered sticks from the garden as the wind blew them from the tree.

“It’s your own interpretation really, but it always has to be well-balanced and in proportion.”

Scone’s Helen Walker picked up second while another local Kara Mitchell took home third in the same section.

Overall best arrangement of the show went to Effie Crawley from Gloucester for her striking entry into the ‘Flamboyance’ section, with the aim of creating a ‘centrepiece’ display.
