Did you know that last Friday 5 October 2018, the new Community Recycling Centre (CRC) at the Scone Waste Management Facility was officially opened by way of a ribbon-cutting event presided over by Upper Hunter MP Michael Johnsen, Upper Hunter Shire Deputy Mayor Maurice Collison and yours truly!

With the support of the "Waste Less, Recycle More" initiative delivered by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and the Environmental Trust, as well as the super-human hard work and commitment of Council's Sustainability and Environment Manager Melinda Hale and her team, residents in the Upper Hunter Shire now have solutions to our pesky waste problems that we really were not sure what to do with before - you know, those problem materials such as household batteries, car batteries, old paints and oils, even gas bottles and all the e-waste stuff that we seem to collect in our day to day lives ... and we can drop it all off for free at the Community Recycling Centre!
The new CRC is simply and clearly laid out - in fact it's an absolute joy to behold, and even if we still get a bit stuck as to where things go, the CRC staff are helpful experts who can help us navigate our way round to make sure we get stuff in the right containers and the right places.
So just to go over again quickly what can we take to the new CRC, we can take paint, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, motor oils, other oils, car batteries, household batteries, smoke detectors, fluoro globes and tubes, and e-waste, and it is important to note that only household quantities of these materials will be accepted.
The EPA's website states that as a guide this is a maximum container of 20 litres or 20 kilograms for each waste type. So businesses need to be mindful that they are not eligible to use Community Recycling Centres and should contact a waste disposal service directly or visit "Business Recycling" on the EPA website under ‘Your Environment’.
The Scone CRC is open the same hours as the Waste Management Facility on Noblet Road, which is Monday to Friday 8am to 4.30pm and weekends 9am to 4pm.
Residents can still drop off domestic amounts of e-waste, batteries, and paper and glass recyclables at waste management facilities in Aberdeen, Merriwa, and Murrurundi as well.
So in a nutshell, Council's new CRC is your drop-off centre for common household problem waste that can’t be collected via council's kerbside waste and recycling collection services, and you can drop off your problem waste at this centre year round, free of charge.
The new CRC is making my heart sing just as much as Scone Civic Theatre and the wonderful reno’s happening there!
