UPPER Hunter Shire Council have been named a finalist for the prestigious NSW Champions of Sport Ceremony at Rosehill Gardens on Tuesday November 27.

Attended by the elite of NSW sport, the awards celebrate the achievements of NSW athletes, coaches, administrators and organisations across 13 award-winning categories.
The ceremony will also see Catherine Cox (Netball), Julie Dolan AM (Football), Jana Pittman (Athletics), Melanie Roche (Softball) and Mark Skaife OAM (Motor Racing) inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions.
Upper Hunter Shire Council is a finalist in the Local Council of the Year Award.
Council was nominated after organising a series of community sport events over the past 12 months including the Wheelchair SportsNSW roadshow visit, gymnastics coaching for young people with a disability, Tai Chi for seniors, the Scone Fun Run for people of all ages and abilities, Scone's colourful run and two Bike Week events.
Council also assisted in bringing Parkrun to Merriwa and sourced funding and then delivered Newcastle University's eCoFit program in the Upper Hunter to encourage seniors to use the outdoor environment to improve their fitness, mental health and social connectedness.
Mayor Wayne Bedggood congratulated council staff including Sports Participation Officer Nicole Western.
Sport NSW Chairperson Joseph La Posta congratulated all finalists saying they have represented NSW sport with honour and distinction over the past 12 months.
“Our nominated athletes and organisations have excelled at the highest levels and we congratulate them on their outstanding achievements,” Mr La Posta said.
“They have made an immense contribution to sport and to our state.
“The finalists uphold NSW’s well-earned reputation as Australia’s premier sports state.
“They join a magnificent assembly of previous athletes, coaches, administrators and organisations who have been considered as finalists in the most prestigious sports Awards NSW offers.
“Sport is a key element of every community across NSW.
“Sport promotes heathy living, drives societal change and binds communities together, and our finalists are lightning rods of inspiration for athletes, coaches and administrators of all ages and abilities,” he added.
