She is encouraging the community to support White Ribbon Day this month which from 2018 onwards will move from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to Friday, November 23.
“White Ribbon Day will continue to be a time for the community to come together and stand up, speak out and act to end men’s violence against women and children,” Lee Watts said.
“According to the World Health Organisation, intimate partner violence is the most common type of violence against women, affecting 30 per cent of women worldwide, and Australia is not immune.
“Violence against women is a serious problem in Australia and at least one woman is killed every week by a current or former partner.”
Mrs Watts said the impact of violence against women is widespread and long-standing, generating profound personal, social and economic costs for individuals, communities and the nation.
“Domestic and family violence is also the major cause of homelessness for women and their children,” she said.
She is urging the community to take a stand and support this cause not just on this day but every day.
Call into the Scone Neighbourhood Centre at 130 Liverpool St before the November 25 and actively show your support by having your photo taken and challenging the attitudes and behaviours that lead to violence against women.
