The club’s president Nicky Western said the event attracted many locals as well as athletes from Canberra, Newcastle, Singleton and Maitland. 

Two-time world champion and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games silver medallist for track cycling, Rebecca Wiasak, won the women's long course event.  

“Her partner Ben Hill, who rides in Europe for a cycling team, won the men's long course event in a time of 50 minutes and 49 seconds - which is a course record that won't be beaten for a long time,” Western added.

“Ben's family put in a team to try and beat him.  

“His dad David, who teaches at Scone High, completed the swim, his brother who is also a semi-professional cyclist did the bike leg, and his brother, who plays ultimate Frisbee for Australia ran the last leg.

“They nearly caught Ben but he managed to hold them off by 10 seconds!”

The Scone Triathlon Club was formed for the first time this year after a local triathlon training group, headed by Ms Western, gained enormous traction.

The next race will be held on Sunday January 27, which she says will “give people time to train off their Christmas excess and come and race”.

“Enter a team or complete the course yourself.”
