In the wrong hands, an almost endless stream of questions like ‘wait how do you mark wides?’, ‘oh I missed that ball, was it a dot?’ and ‘hold on, why are the books on different scores?’ can be heard ringing out from the stands.
But when given to somebody reliable it can help determine an entire result, which was the case as Bunnan hunted down the away team’s score with just one wicket in hand in a nerve-racking if not slightly confusing ending.
Confident they had tracked down the Blue’s total of 107, Bunnan took the umpire’s advice to play out the rest of the over just in case, only to see their last batsman dismissed the very next ball, meaning the score sheet had to be perfectly accurate.
Fortunately for the home side it was and a late scare from the Brook’s bowlers, including a wonderful hat-trick from Josh Cooper, wasn’t quite enough to rob them of a hard fought win.
Mick Soper was best with the ball for the victors, taking 3 for 27 from his 8 overs while Matthew Langan put in the most important batting performance with a 41 as opener, before falling victim to Cooper.
The match signalled Bunnan’s fourth and most interesting win of the season, with the score sheet technically seeing them secure a 0 wicket victory.
Bushrangers chased down Aberdeen with six wickets in hand for their win, which has put them into sixth place and within striking distance of the top four.
Cameron Waugh picked up the winning side’s most runs in that game, with a modest 24 being enough to significantly dent Aberdeen’s first innings total of just 84.
Meanwhile in other fixtures, Rouchel were easily dismissed by Murrurundi who contained their opponents to 91, then made the score themselves before the 20th over, Belltrees disposed of ninth placed Brook Silver by 8 wickets and the match between Merriwa and Belmore Bulls was washed out.
