A swing of 2.2 per cent against sitting member The National Michael Johnsen could result in the seat going to Country Labor's Melanie Dagg.
Shooters Fishers and Farmers candidate Lee Watts has received 20.6 per cent of the vote and it will be her preferences that will most probably decide the final outcome.
Ms Dagg, the deputy mayor of Cessnock, has polled well in Singleton and Muswellbrook with Ms Watts gaining the most support in her hometown of Scone and nearby Aberdeen but she also polled well in traditional National areas.
Mr Johnsen said he expects the result will not be known tonight which is the same as the 2015 election when it took till lunchtime on the following day for him declare himself the winner.
"I had a hang-over in 2015 when the result became known and I think that will be the same for 2019," he joked with his supporters at his campaign office in Singleton on Saturday night.
Once again Mr Johnsen relied on support from the traditional Nationals booths in Cassilis, Wallabadah, Gresford and Gloucester, Dungog and Qurindi.
Ms Dagg was watching the counting with supporters at Club Singleton and enduring the rollercoaster ride that comes when contesting a marginal seat.
She thanked her campaign staff and volunteers for all their dedication.
Having taken on the task to win a seat, that has always been held by the Nationals, following the shock resignation of former Country Labor candidate Muswellbrook Mayor Martin Rush, Ms Dagg has no doubt impressed those in her party having achieved a swing against the sitting member when she was a virtual 'unknown' at the start of her campaign.
Scone based Ms Watts said last night "I think it's a pretty good result, it's still a close call but I can only say that we did our best, we tried hard."
"We still believe the major parties need to go so we need to make room to make change in this electorate.
"All I can say is we've enjoyed the ride it's just unfortunate we're not going to win the seat."
