That is exactly was has happened this week, as the club president received a successful nomination for the Newcastle Permanent Community Coach of the Month award for his work with the under 13s.
He was notified at a pop-up function at Bill Rose Sports Complex on Wednesday evening, where he was greeted by officials and dozens of his players, who seemed almost more excited than he was.
"I was fairly surprised, I though the guys were coming here to do a facilities audit so I rushed away from work pretty quickly to get back here, and I was completely overwhelmed by what I turned up to," he said.
As part of the reward, the club has received equipment including footballs, bibs, drink bottles and a commemorative shirt has been given to the award recipient.
The current all-age player revealed the aspect he was most pleased with was just knowing he was appreciated internally.
"For me it's more highly regarded to know the parents value my contribution," he said.
"Helping these guys out and helping them achieve what they want to within football - that's the valuable recognition to me."
His effort certainly has gone above and beyond considering he only got involved originally because his children play, but he is now a pillar of the Mustangs and a nurturer of young talent from all across the town.
He explained that being able to share what knowledge he has of the game with the youngsters is extremely rewarding.
Clearly that wisdom has been working wonders, as the under 13s side has picked up four wins from their past five games with an aggregate score of 16-4, leaving them atop of the table after seven rounds.
The enjoyment the coach gets from managing the team is clearly being passed down to the players, and the positive atmosphere around the club is leading to group and individual success.
