However, it can be challenging for some to afford such a luxury, with formal wear often being astronomically priced for boys and girls alike.
That is why Upper Hunter Community Services are launching a new program aimed at getting locals to donate their past formal dresses and suits, which will in turn be given to those who want to enjoy a wonderful night without it hitting the pocket.
With donations finishing on August 7, locals are being urged to get on board with the scheme.
"We know every year that some families struggle with the cost of formals, and also this year there's probably an extra struggle with the drought," said Upper Hunter community and youth development officer, Bec Eveleigh.
The idea has been trialled in other areas, which has inspired UHCS to attempt the program in the Upper Hunter Shire, Muswellbrook Shire and Singleton Council districts.
While they are unsure how successful it will be, they are hoping it will create a significant and positive difference in the lives of some teenagers and their families.
"We just hope that as many people as possible take advantage of it, but more than anything to make this a success we need people to donate dresses and suits, shoes and accessories of the current fashion," said Ms Eveleigh.
They have already received a number of clothing items for females but are calling on more men to get involved with the program.
Drop off centres are at the UHCS Centre in Muswellbrook, Aberdeen Treasures, Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre, Singleton Youth Venue and Merriwa Information Centre.
