Race 1 @ 1.25pm HQ INSURANCE 2YO MAIDEN PLATE (900m; Set Weights & apprentices can claim)
We launch the meeting over the short course for the maidens, and it's an intriguing dash, with most of the field on debut. Randwick-trained colt 1. Nitrous, by boom sprint sire Deep Field, looks very hard to beat. Was swamped on debut in the much tougher Group 3 Breeders Plate during spring, but trialled okay behind a couple of smart youngsters, the winner on show in Thursday's feature Magic Millions 2YO Classic at Wyong. Draws a nice gate, and senior country rider is on for leading metropolitan juvenile stable.
Dangers: Debutant stablemate 3. Strategist, by prolific Written Tycoon out of a Listed-winning mare by Exceed And Excel, also worked home nicely in a recent trial; while Muswellbrook gelding 2. Scorched Land, by speed sire Sizzling out of a Duke Of Marmalade mare, can run a race off two trials.
Betting attack: Back Nitrous to win and box exacta 1, 2, 3
Race 2 @ 2.00pm ABBEY THOROUGHBREDS & DALMORE BM 58 HCP (2200m; 3YO & upwards; Min Weight 54 kg & apprentices can claim)
Good competitive staying battle for this grade, and it swings on whether progressive 4YO Newcastle mare 1. Autumn rain can run out the longer trip under 60kg? Two runs back on this track swept home for a dominant maiden win over the mile, before had it run to suit off a slow tempo at Muswellbrook, and again strolled home with something in the tank. Settles well and certainly racing like the extra 350m will be no problem, and this isn't strong.
Dangers: Newcastle-trained 4YO mare and former South Australian 3. Miss Fialka looks the biggest threat getting out to her pet trip. Has had two runs back from a long spell, and finished off nicely at Pt Macquarie last start when jumping from 1400m to 2000m. Improving 5YO Tamworth gelding 2. Kliftee produced his best run for a long while two starts back getting home hard behind high class Gem Dealer in a Class 3 at Quirindi before working home again same track and grade over the mile. Rises in weight too, and only getting 2.5kg from the top-weight is unlikely to be enough.
Betting attack: Autumn Rain to win and quinella 1 and 3
Race 3 @ 2.35pm - CHOCOLATE & MOSS FLORISTRY MAIDEN HCP (1600m; Min Weight 55.5 kg & apprentices can claim)
Wide open mile here, with plenty of chances, and tempo will have a big say. Local 4YO mare 2. Lady Llewellyn keeps improving and looks ready to win fourth-up over the right journey. Closed off from a long way back as an easing favourite in a handy maiden on Mudgee Cup day, and that should top her off, with top country hoop returning to the saddle.
Dangers: Plenty of them headed by Include 4YO Wyong mare 5. Schengen who looks well suited stepping up to the mile after two solid closing runs back, and draws to get a nice trail. Another one trained on the track, 3YO filly 8. Everjust is still to run a place from six starts, but did her best work late second-up over this distance at Tamworth, and getting back to the much bigger track is a plus; while 3YO Newcastle gelding 3. King's Row raced fairly and exclusively over the mile at the provincials through winter, and after getting a long way back resuming at Quirindi, will improve stepping to this trip again.
Betting attack: Lady Llewellyn each way and box trifecta 2, 3, 5, 8
Race 4 @ 3.10pm - ASSER HOUSE CAFE MAIDEN HCP (1300m; Min Weight 54.5 kg & apprentices can claim)
Tricky contest here for a mostly inexperienced group, with no horse (excluding emergencies) having raced more than four times, but after four improving runs in his first prep, 3YO Randwick gelding 4. Balladeer looks well placed to break through. Generally likes to take a trail a few lengths off the speed, and finished hard last start on this track to miss nailing handy galloper Schemer by a head.
Dangers: Newcastle 3YO filly and first starter 10. Cafe Royal, by Snitzel, has had two recent trials, and love the way she ran through the line in her latest at Rosehill. Was immediately transferred to Nathan Doyle from the Hawkes stable in Sydney, and debuts in blinkers on a track that should suit her apparent style. Rival Newcastle filly 11. Andaluna can improve at her third start up in trip and dropping to the limit weight. No question 4YO local gelding 1. Dante Alexander has the ability, but will have a tough job getting in from a wide draw. Rattled home at a big price on debut at Muswellbrook before a moderate closing effort at Bathurst, but clearly looks a big track horse. Include 3YO Newcastle gelding 9. Krayzelburg in exotics after sticking on well in a handy maiden at Pt Macquarie first-up; while include another locally trained filly 12. Bit Of A Beauty who shunned her big price on debut at Muswellbrook by finishing on late, and trainer has added the blinkers and put senior ride on for this sharp rise in trip.
Betting attack: Balladeer to win and box exacta 4, 10, 11
Race 5 @ 3.50pm - EQUILAW CLASS 3 HCP (900m; Min Weight 54 kg & apprentices can claim)
Back to the dash, and this is a deep race. Local 4YO mare 5. Fritz's Factor resumes without a public trial, but performs fresh, is well in at the weights, and unbeaten from two starts on her home track. Just needs to work across and find some cover from a wide gate, and has the most explosive final 300m in the race.
Dangers: Newcastle 5YO gelding 6. Titus must be a threat second-up from the good draw after just missing first-up at Muswellbrook, and drops 4.5 kg for this tougher assignment. Wyong 5YO gelding 3. Perfect Style is a short-course specialist who hasn't been beaten far in two runs back over this distance. Looked sharp in a recent open trial, and trainer has rung the gear chances, while form rider takes 2 kg off. Muswellbrook 5YO mare 2. Imacrumpet resumes without a public trial, but has plenty of tactical speed, and two of her three career wins have come fresh. Pt Macquarie 6YO gelding 1. Tikkitala resumes off a tidy trial, and normally comes to hand quickly. Hasn't won since bolting in a weaker Class 2 at Armidale when leading all the way in autumn, so will need to jump clean and go forward from the inside barrier. Both 5YO mares Tamworth-based 7. Elle's Nel and Wauchope's 8. Odds Or Evens are knockout hopes at longer odds.
Betting attack: Fritz's Factor to win and first four 3, 5, 6/1, 2, 3, 5, 6/1, 2, 3, 5, 6/1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8
Race 6 @ 4.30pm - GODOLPHIN BM 58 HCP (1400m; Min Weight 54 kg & apprentices can claim)
Strong and open race for this grade, and could be dominated by visiting Novacastrians. Hard keen on talented 3YO Newcastle colt 12. Dodecanese is well in at the weights after rider's 2 kg claim, and looks supremely suited third-up. Charged home late behind two good ones this track second-up, and draws even better.
Dangers: Rival 4YO mare 7. Delchuzy steps to an ideal distance, and draws to get cover off the fence around midfield on a track that suits her closing style. Drops 2 kg from a solid effort fresh run, and already a second-up winner. Trainer has removed the blinkers. Newcastle gelding 8. Opinions is much better suited getting to the bigger track third-up after two fair efforts in Class 1 provincial company, and draws well with senior rider booked. Muswellbrook 5YO gelding 2. Timion recaptured his best form storming home to win a Class 1 at Muswellbrook third-up, but this is looks tougher, and weighted to his absolute best with 60 kg. Locally-trained 4YO mare 13. Stella Maris appreciated the drop back from metro company to narrowly land her maiden at Quirindi, and while this is tougher, she's on the rise. Muswellbrook gelding 3. Asudem would be one of the hardest to beat if he hadn't drawn out in the car park. Finished hard first-up to win a thinner race at Goulburn before right on the heels of the place-getters in a BM 66 at home. Right trip now, but big ask up to 59.5 kg from the gate.
Betting attack: Dodecanese to win and box trifecta 2, 7,8, 12
Race 7 @ 5.10pm - SCONE THOROUGHBREDS JRL CLASS 2 HCP (1300m; Min Weight 54 kg & apprentices can claim)
Trained on the track and lightly raced, 3YO gelding 2. Eiger is headed for bigger riches. Flew home from midfield to win both starts during winter before returning with a solid closing run here in a Class 3 this behind Powertrain who has since won again. Drawn wide, but will come in a few spots.
Dangers: Local 4YO 1. Partners comes back from a metro BM 70, and draws well third-up for a gelding who loves to dominate from the front, but this trip down a long straight with 61.5 kg is a big ask. Local 5YO stallion 3. Christo hasn't started since a close second in a BM 66 here in the autumn, and drawn off the track, but has plenty of ability, and hit the line well in a recent trial. Muswellbrook 4YO gelding 4. Dubai Harbour has held his form nicely through this prep winning two of four, and gets a vital 3kg claim, but meeting deeper opposition here. Watch the market on resuming 4YO Muswellbrook gelding 5. Absolute Trust who was a dominant winner on debut this track back in July before being spelled, and has trialled strongly; while down on the 54 kg limit both resuming 3YO Newcastle filly 12. Cerinthe Belle, and Warwick Farm-based filly and last-start maiden winner in Canberra 13. Latina Beauty, can be included in exotics.
Betting attack: Eiger to win
Race 8 @ 5.50pm - AUSURE & MURRULLA STUD OPEN HCP (1100m; Min Weight 54 kg & apprentices can claim)
Cracking open class sprint to finish, with a stack of live hopes. Local 7YO gelding 3. Professor Marx will be forced to go a long way back from the outside barrier, but late in the day with plenty of speed on up front, he can power over the top. Hit the line hard in three straight good quality sprints before almost a good thing beaten in the BM 81 Mudgee Sprint on Cup day recovering to be beaten less than two lengths after blowing the start.
Dangers: Lightly-raced 4YO Tamworth gelding 8. General Scarlet loves to lead, and has a 50 per cent winning strike rate from just eight starts. Draws well but will be hearing the footsteps late in the straight. Newcastle 6YO gelding 2. All From Scrap hasn't started for more than seven months and draws wide, but has built an impressive record only missing a place eight times from 21 starts, and normally fires fresh. Trained on the track, 6YO gelding 11. Rhyming Puppet sailed home late fourth-up off a long spell to win a Class 3 at Tamworth, and drops 5kg from that, but this is obviously much tougher.
Betting attack: Professor Marx each-way and box trifecta 2, 3, 8, 11
