"SHOCKED" and "overwhelmed" were two words a stunned Tash Taaffe used to sum up being named the Merriwa District 2020 Citizen of the Year on Sunday.

The Merriwa RSL Club was filled to the brim on January 26 to not only recognise the region's community-minded residents but to celebrate Australia Day in style.
Even Ambassador, and gardening guru, Graham Ross added another element to proceedings, giving the audience a history lesson on Merriwa.
But, all of the acclaim centred on Ms Taaffe - and her incredible passion for the town she loves dearly.
"You do what you do because you want to," she said.
"Not once do you do it for any praise or credit.
"However, it's very humbling to be acknowledged in this way.
"Quite simply, I love Merriwa - and the people who live here.
"I'd like to thank those who nominated me."
To say Ms Taaffe is a tireless volunteer is an understatement.
She has been a passionate coach and president of Merriwa Little Athletics for the past eight years, seeing the club grow in that time from less than 10 athletes to more than 50, introducing specialised clinics with elite mentors and training camps.
And, when not running track and field over summer, she is the "canteen lady" at Merriwa Pony Club, coordinating numerous events to raise thousands of dollars for the organisation, as well as polocrosse, the hostel, playgroup, athletics and local schools.
The Upper Hunter Shire Council community services officer is also passionate about supporting students in town and has assisted countless high-schoolers with resumes, references and mock interviews.
She's put her communication skills to good use, too, promoting hundreds of events in her own time, including the Merriwa Springtime Show, school and sport functions.
That Ms Taaffe manages to contribute so greatly to her community while raising a farming family through the toughest of droughts is testament to her commitment, dedication and drive.
Her positive presence and impact is felt by all who meet her.
Meanwhile, in other categories, Jackson Keane took home Young Citizen of the Year.
Julia Wilton picked up Achiever of the Year while Nicole Martin was awarded Young Achiever of the Year.
The Community Group of the Year went to the Merriwa Tourist Welcoming Centre and Men's Shed.
Ben Frampton collected the Sustainability in Business Award, with Denis Nutt being recognised for Environmental Achievement.
Merriwa Central's Victoria McNaught and Chelsea Borradaile were presented the School Achievement and Creative Arts Excellence awards respectively.
Both girls each receive a $1000 cheque from council to go towards tertiary study in their chosen category, too.
