St Mary's Primary School Scone's Monique Lloyd was awarded the Emmaus Award for Excellence in Teaching on Tuesday night.

Mrs Lloyd has been teaching in the Maitland Newcastle Diocese since 1995 in both St Mary's Scone and St James' Muswellbrook.

St Mary's principal Kim Wilson said Mrs Lloyd has proven to be a highly valued and integral part of the school community.

"Monique works tirelessly to ensure the children of her class feel comforted and secure in their learning environment," she said.

"Over the past two years, St Mary's has been on a journey to become a Positive Education school where children's social and emotional wellbeing is paramount.

"The school has implemented explicit teaching of social and emotional lessons and initiated many school wide activities that focus on the importance of wellbeing."

As a member of the school's Positive Education Implementation team, Mrs Lloyd has led the way with many of these classroom and school wide initiatives.

She is also instrumental in supporting the wellbeing of staff members through her kindness, understanding and compassion, Ms Wilson said.

"Monique's dedication to our school goes far beyond classroom duties," she added.

"She has become a respected member of the St Mary's school and parish community and wider Scone community.

"Monique understands the importance of having every member of the team working together for the greater benefit of all in our school community."

Mrs Lloyd consistently goes out of her way to assist with school events, fundraising activities, and catering purposes and coordinates school social gatherings.

These qualities, and the fact she comes to school every day with the purpose of making a difference, is why the school thoroughly feels the recognition is well-earned.

However Mrs Lloyd was quick to point to the work of the whole school community rather than her own achievements, offering a very humble response.

"Since I first started teaching, my philosophy has always been 'it is not the good work of one, but the great work of many'," she told The Advocate.
