Air Marshal, by Smart Missile from Ratatat Lass, stormed home to claim the $48,000 first prize purse by a length from Depth That Varies (Tom Sherry) and early leader Crackneck (Robbie Dolan).
Muswellbrook mentor Jan Bowen's Emilette (Greg Ryan) finished fourth.
It was Air Marshal's third victory from 13 starts - and lifted the four-year-old bay gelding's prizemoney tally to more than $100,000.
Schmetzer's other runner, the highly-fancied The Snooperstar (Sam Clipperton), placed seventh over the 1100m journey.
The race was a curtain-raiser to the $1.3 million Kosciusko, which features Upper Hunter trainers Todd Howlett (Two Big Fari) and Brett Cavanough (It's Me and Fender), and the prestigious TAB The Everest, worth a massive $15 million.
