Upper Hunter MP Michael Johnsen said funding from the NSW Government's $2.3 billion COVID-19 package announced in March has allowed Transport for NSW to bring forward and deliver projects in addition to its planned program of work.

"The Nationals in Government have already invested $1 million through the Safer Roads Program to improve safety on the New England Highway between Dumaresq Street and Cressfield Road," Mr Johnsen said.

"As a result of the stimulus package, an additional $1.2 million has been allocated to bring forward improvements, including installing a one metre wide centre line and audio tactile line marking, also known as rumble strips, along the centre and outside lines.

"The project will also rebuild a 540 metre section of the highway, install 280 metres of new roadside barrier and widen the road shoulder near property accesses and intersections.

"These improvements will not only help to ensure road users complete their journeys more safely, they will also boost the local economy by supporting 50 full time jobs and providing work for 12 suppliers and contractors in these difficult times."

Work on the New England Highway at Parkville will start on Monday, October 26 and is expected to take 12 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Work will be carried out from 7am to 5pm on weekdays with a reduced speed limit of 40km/h during work hours. On occasions, work will be carried out on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm.
