Upper Hunter Shire Council said the roads were impassable due to flooding and there was no diversion possible.

A spokesperson for Upper Hunter Shire Council said the road may be passable later on Friday afternoon depending on weather conditions due to an expected break in rainfall.

The Council said major flooding is expected on the Kingdon Ponds in Scone after confirming reports the river had broken its banks.

"Local residents are advised to take care and move to higher ground. The river is at 3.74m and still rising. Major flood is predicted," Upper Hunter Shire Council said.

The Upper Hunter Shire Council also confirmed reports that the Pages River has broken its banks in Murrurundi and warned motorists of a fallen tree on the Golden Highway.

"There is a tree down across the westbound lane on the Golden Highway at Gungal. Please take care in the area," the Council said.

The Council also notified horse owners in the Scone region that the Scone Race Club was available for those needing to relocate their animals to higher ground.

"If anyone needs to relocate their horses to higher ground in the Scone area, the Scone Race Club has its race day stalls open," the Council said.
