No one puts Dubai in the corner when it comes to size. The capital of bling is home to the world's tallest building (Burj Khalifa), the deepest swimming pool (Deep Dive Dubai, where you can plunge 60 metres below the surface of water) and the highest Ferris wheel (Ain Dubai, which doesn't spin anymore, perhaps - ironically - due to the the sheer size of it). So it's only natural for the emirate to vie for the world's tallest hotel. Enter the 82-storey Ciel Tower, which will open in the second quarter of 2024 and claim that title. There will be a bar on the 76th floor and an observatory on the 82nd storey, so it's worth putting this hotel on your must-visit list for sweeping views, even if you're not checking into a room there. cieltower.net
If your idea of the quintessential romantic island getaway is the Maldives, then it's time to challenge that perception. The Islands of Tahiti are not only closer to Australia than the Maldives, they're far more affordable and less crowded, too. From giant sculptures suspended from the ceiling in the bars to bright-coloured bedheads set against the backdrop of bespoke wallpapers in the guest rooms, every corner at the 10 hotels owned by the couple in New York and London is designed to leave you mesmerised. A distinct sense of calm and elegance is about to descend on Hanover Square, the oldest square in London's posh Mayfair neighbourhood, when the second Mandarin Oriental (the first one is located right next to Hyde Park) opens in the city in the northern spring this year. There's no dearth of striking hotels with cutting-edge comfort in Singapore, but when this property opens in the city-state in the third quarter of this year, it's bound to raise the bar. Expect achingly cool rooms - the kind that draw the most fashion-savvy guests to Standard outposts around the world: from New York City's Meatpacking District to London's Kings Cross.
