What's good about it? Slovakia's capital is framed by the Little Carpathians mountain range to the north, with its famous hrad (castle) overlooking the Danube. Below the castle, the Old Town is home to refined mansions, art nouveau residences, cobblestone streets and distinctive sculptures, complemented by its thriving brewing culture.

Best for: Follow the historic Amber Road, and discover landmarks along the way. Pause to appreciate the Gothic-style Universitas Istropolitana, Slovakia's oldest university. In the main square, marvel at the Roland Fountain. Near the square, look for the rococo Grassalkovich Palace, home to the president, and the Archbishop's Palace, now the mayor's residence.

Best time to visit: During spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) when mild weather and fewer crowds prevail.
