Police were called to a Princes Highway intersection in Engadine at 9am on August 25 following reports the 58-year-old man stabbed his partner while she sat in the passenger seat of their white Jaguar.
"We believe the female was being assaulted in the car while the male was driving the vehicle at the same time," superintendent Donald Faulds said.
"A number of witnesses mentioned that the car was driving quite erratically at the time, and we believe that was when the assault was occurring," he said.
"As a result they then collided with another vehicle."

The driver crashed into a blue Mitsubishi Lancer at the intersection. The impact broke the 20-year-old Lancer driver's wrist.
First responders came to the aid of the Jaguar's front seat passenger but the 58-year-old man allegedly continued his violent attack, stabbing a 67-year-old man in the abdomen, before fleeing the scene.
A police officer, who also allegedly suffered a knife wound to his wrist during the arrest, deployed a Taser to arrest the man.
