Police began following the man, a 21-year-old from Nambour near the Sunshine Coast's hinterland after he allegedly forced a woman into his car at 6.30pm on September 16.
His tyres were popped when police laid a deflation device on Nambour Connection Road, near the Big Pineapple, but the man allegedly accelerated through a red light and crashed into a Toyota Camry.
He fled the crash scene on foot and ran into traffic on Bruce Highway, police said.
Footage released by police showed an officer chasing the man as he attempted to escape.
A Rav4 stopped and the man allegedly punched the 64-year-old driver "in the head several times" before pulling him from the car.
He allegedly climbed into the driver's seat and attempted to escape police.
But the 52-year-old woman in the Rav4 passenger seat jumped into action and pressed the 'push button' to turn off the car.

The proximity keys, needed to restart the car, were still in the driver's pocket when he was thrown from the Rav4 and the suspect was unable to make his getaway.
Police arrested the man and he was charged with one count of domestic violence deprivation of liberty, robbery with violence and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
He is scheduled to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on September 17.
