
A man has been refused bail after allegedly trying to pry open a Waratah business while armed with a hammer then stealing groceries from another shop.

Police were called to a business on Turton Road just before 9.30pm on Sunday, January 12 following reports of a break and enter.
Officers were told at the scene that a man allegedly armed with a hammer tried to forcefully open the front doors of a premises before he allegedly stole grocery items from another business.
Following inquiries, police found and arrested a 32-year-old man, Harley Enniss, about 20 minutes later.
Officers allege a hammer was seized from the scene.
Enniss was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with attempted break and enter with intent to commit serious indictable offence, larceny and armed with intent to commit indictable offence.
He spent the night in police custody before fronting Newcastle Local Court on Monday, January 13.
Enniss made an unsuccessful bid for release and was ordered to remain behind bars ahead of his next court appearance in March.
Police will compile a brief of evidence in the meantime.
