The body of 51-year-old Mikhael Fladimer was found in Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney's west about 6.30am on Sunday.
Police allege he had suffered a serious wound before his death.
Another detainee, Yousuf Adbulmaseeh, 29, was arrested by arriving police and taken to Bankstown Police Station where he was charged with murder.
The fatal incident took place on Saturday or Sunday, court documents seen by AAP say.
Adbulmaseeh's Legal Aid solicitor Cassandra Giudice did not apply for bail during a brief hearing at Bankstown Local Court on Monday.
The 29-year-old did not appear by video link from prison.
His case has been transferred to Burwood Local Court where it has been listed for March 11.
Police will be expected to give the brief of evidence to Adbulmaseeh's defence lawyers at that time.
