The pad is laid and the equipment on its way for the outdoor gym, which will be a free facility for all community members to enjoy.
The gym and complimentary barbecue area will be located at the Wilson Memorial Oval in Murrurundi near the current children’s playground, the sports oval, and not too far away from the indoor gym, tennis courts and swimming pool.
The project has been in the pipeline since 2011, however received the final green light last week when it was named as one of nine projects in the Upper Hunter Shire to receive funding under the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program.
An impressive $10,000 was allocated to the Lions Club of Murrurundi who are constructing the barbecue area to compliment the gym, which is being constructed and partly funded by the Upper Hunter Shire Council.
After admiring the outdoor gym at the Bill Rose Sports Complex in Scone, a Lions member approached the council in 2011 requesting a similar structure in Murrurundi and the club is excited to see the project now progressing.
The club has raised funds throughout the community to purchase a new electric barbecue and build a cover for it, which will be a great addition as there is currently no free barbecue to use at the oval.
Construction of the $50,000 project is expected to occur throughout the next two weeks.
Lions Club of Murrurundi treasurer Larry Norton said the outdoor gym will be ideal and in a great location as not everyone goes to the gym, so they will be able to go to the park and exercise for as long as they want for free.
“Everyone can use it, no matter their age and everything will be in a central place to bring everyone together.
“It’s a real positive for the community,” he said.
Mr Norton said the club of about 14 active members have raised the extra funds by way of community fundraising, which has also allowed them to build and contribute to many projects in the past, including the pool, Lions Park, the Murrurundi and District Pre-School and community members in need.
“The club would like to thank everyone involved in the grant application process, especially Tess Hynes who helped us a lot.”
Member for Upper Hunter George Souris said he was pleased that 52 projects in the Hunter Electorate were selected as part of the 1500 across NSW.
“There was a strong level of interest from the community for the available funds, with almost 3000 applications received across NSW.”
